MIUT - The Madeira Island Ultra-Trail

Every year many from across the globe arrive on the island to take part in the ultimate challenge, - The Madeira Island Ultra Trail (MIUT).  This event has gained popularity through the years amongst running enthusiasts.  The next MIUT is taking place on the 25th of April 2020.

The MIUT has three race categories, namely the Ultra, Marathon and Mini.

  • The MIUT Ultra is a 85 km challenge and is a true test of endurance.  Starting in Porto Moniz a moving up towards Encumeada , Pico do Arieiro , Pico Ruivo the highest point on the island then descending to Ribiero Frio, Portela and finishing off in Machico.
  • The MIUT Marathon is a 42 km race starting in Monte, moving towards Chao da Lagoa, Poiso, Riberio Frio, Larano, Canical and finishing in Machico.
  • The MIUT Mini is 16 km and as one can imagine, a less intense running course compared to the Marathon and Ultra. Nonetheless it’s still builds a sweat. The MIUT Mini starts in Porto da Cruz on route to Larano, Canical and finally finishing off in Machico.

Runners no doubt will witness breathtaking landscapes with backdrops of cascading waterfalls and magnificent rock formations and mountain ranges.

The Madeira island has through the years become a popular holiday destination for active outdoor individuals wanting to explore the island and participate in the numerous adventure activities available, from hiking, biking to canyoning and paragliding.
